One of the things I love about small town life is the opportunity for space and peace, for reflection. (As I write this, I hear a plane flying overhead, because we are near the regional airport. But whatevs. It’s a consistent if not perfect true statement.)
Returning to our small town in Eastern Carolina from a few days of the whole Phoenix city bustle, my husband embraced the power of silence. He made my Mum stand outside and listen. (One of her ears mostly works.)
DJ: “Mom, listen!”
Mum: “What, listen to what?” (Mum looking around like sound will take visible form)
DJ: “Nothing! Isn’t it glorious?”
Seeing stars pulse with silvery light, in silence that presses on your ears, truly is glorious. Makes it harder to see on the roads, but when there are fewer cars….who cares?
I leave you with Bhaskar Banerjee’s article “The Power of Silence” for additional inspiration
